The owner of a dog has been issued with an infringement for $1320 by members of the Rural Crime Prevention Team in relation to an attack upon some sheep at a property on the Gwydir Highway, Moree, on August 27.

The owner of the dog is a 30-year-old Moree male.
It is alleged that the dog wandered onto the property where it has attacked a mob of Dorper weaners, resulting in four sheep being killed and a further five sheep being destroyed due to their injuries.

The dog has been seized and will face the possibility of being euthanized or being declared a 'dangerous dog' under the Companion Animals Act, which would result in the owner facing heavy control requirements around the care, control and confinement of the animal.
The owner of a 'dangerous dog' which further attacks livestock could face penalties of up to $55,000 or 4 years imprisonment.
The owner in this case also faces a statutory liability for the damages in respect of the injuries and deaths caused to livestock.
Police remind dog owners that they are legally obliged to take all reasonable precautions to prevent their dog from their properties.
