Rural Fire Service aircraft and firefighters are battling to control a grass fire south east of Glen Innes on Wednesday afternoon.

The grass fire, near Costello’s Road near Pinkett, sparked up some time on Tuesday morning with the Northern Tablelands RFS issuing its first warning at 10am.
At that time the fire had consumed 400 hectares of land, although that area had spread to at least 1140 hectares by 3.30pm, although is classified as ‘being controlled’ under a Watch and Act alert.

The fire has been burning in an easterly direction towards Pinkett Rd, Ryans Road and Pinkett Showground, with the RFS warning that properties may come under threat later in the afternoon and evening.
An RFS spokesperson said that the fire is burning under high fire conditions.
“Firefighters supported by aircraft are working to slow the spread of the fire and protect isolated rural properties.
“Under these conditions, fires can be difficult to control. Embers may be blown ahead of the fire, creating spot fires. These spot fires may threaten your home earlier than the predicted main fire front.”
Residents in the vicinity of Costello Road and Pinkett Road are urged to monitor the situation and ensure their Bush Fire Survival Plan is up to date.
