Magistrate Michael Holmes said the young woman in the Golgotha Street house would have been extremely frightened when the 16-year-old and two others stormed in on March 25.
On Thursday, the teenager, who has been in custody since his admission to the offences in May, appeared in Armidale Children’s Court for sentencing.
The boy pleaded guilty to charges of robbery armed with an offensive weapon and aggravated break-and-enter and commit serious indictable offence while people are there.
Mr Holmes said the case involved a particularly nasty set of facts and the woman, aged in her twenties, would have been nothing short of terrified when she was confronted by the three offenders.
He said he had no other option but to impose a control order.
Mr Holmes sentenced him to 12 months in juvenile detention with an additional six months on probation.
After time served, the boy will be eligible for release in May 2019.
Detectives are still appealing for public help to track down the teen’s two accomplices.
Police said the trio broke in through a window and threatened the resident with a knife. They then robbed the woman of a phone and other goods.
The offenders were dressed in dark clothing at the time and fled the property shortly after.
