Tamworth Regional Council will use a grant from the federal government to install almost $1 million worth of CCTV cameras across the region, including Manilla and Barraba.
Mayor Col Murray said the 80 cameras included both fixed and mobile units, but wouldn’t reveal their exact location.
“They’ll be around the CBD and crime hotspots, but that won’t be for public discussion,” Cr Murray said.
“The only thing anyone who wants to participate in criminal activity needs to understand is that they’re most likely to be captured on CCTV, whether mobile or fixed.
“Anywhere and everywhere that crimes happens, criminals should expect to be captured on film – and I’m very pleased to say it will be high-quality film.”

New England MP Barnaby Joyce, who announced the funding, said Homes North community housing would also get nearly $14,000 to install CCTV cameras around its unit complexes, while $16,200 would be used to put up cameras in Merriwa’s CBD.
“Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it happening,” Mr Joyce said.
Cr Murray said the cameras would be a “great asset” to local police.
“The rubber really hits the road when the police have access to good hard evidence like high-quality CCTV footage,” he said.
The money was distributed under round two of the Safer Communities Fund.
