Barry Vale faces a maximum of 25 years behind bars if found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
The 30-year-old is accused of slashing the throat of a 33-year-old man at the doorstep of a Morris Street house in Armidale about 2.45am on Sunday.
Detectives allege the attack came after an earlier confrontation at a service station on the corner of Marsh and Dumaresq Streets, about 15 minutes beforehand.
Police say the pair were embroiled in an argument about 2.30am before they left the scene in separate vehicles.
The 33-year-old then went to the Morris Street home where detectives then allege the 30-year-old opened the door and struck the man with the machete. The 33-year-old ran from the scene and raised the alarm.
He was treated by paramedics and rushed to Armidale hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.
On Monday, police said the man was in a stable condition.
Vale was arrested on Sunday and taken to Armidale Police Station and questioned by detectives before he was charged.
He was refused bail and fronted an out-of-sessions bail hearing in Armidale Local Court on Monday morning, where he was granted release with several conditions.
As part of his bail, Vale must not come within 100km of the Armidale township and he’s prohibited from drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
He’s been ordered to live at an address on the Mid North Coast, must not contact the alleged victim or witnesses and will have to report daily to police.
Vale will return to court later this month.
