The Werris Creek Magpies, coached by Ron Dellar and Matt Parsons, led 30-10 after some typical flowing attacks but had to dig deep as Shaun Ferguson inspired the Cowboys in a second half comeback.
The Magpies weathered the storm. Harley Milgate and Jermain Walford, who both scored two tries, were outstanding as the Magpies scored two late tries to celebrate a good win.
“We started well with the imports playing well,” Dellar said. “Harley Milgate and Jermain Walford were very good. Jermain might be little but he’s quick. It was a good performance but we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”
Kootingal also enjoyed a win first up, grabbing a 40-20 win over Boggabri Kangaroos at Boggabri’s Jubilee Oval on Saturday.
The Roosters led 16-10 at half-time and were inspired by prop Brodie Sowter and fullback Mitchell Doring.
Doring crossed for two of the seven Rooster tries while Kangaroos five-eighth Kialu Brown and second rower Ben Haire tried to ignite the home side.
