Four Tamworth City BMX Club members travelled to Bunbury in Western Australia for the 2018 Australian BMX Championships two weeks ago.
The riders – Zac Whalan (11 boys), Jack Davis (16 boys), Dan Morris (17-24 men) and Mark Stones (40-45 men) – not only competed but all finished with top eight finishes within their groups.
While Davis (1A) and Morris (6A) have both won national plates before, Stones produced his best result at the championships.
Stones finished eighth in his class, his highest finish in over 20 years of competing at national level.
It was also a bit of a landmark result for Stones who suffers from cerebral palsy.
As there is no class for disable riders, he races against able-bodied competitors.
It was also the first Aussie plate for young Zac.
The junior BMX rider impressed in all his motos and finals.
Zac finished with one of the top two fastest lap times all day and also set four of the six fastest reaction times (speed out of the gate) in his age division.
RELATED STORIES:
The big performance was a long time coming for Zac.
Last year, Zac had a crash leading into the event which forced him to miss the championships.
This year’s performance truly made up for it with some brilliant riding making a lot of very good BMX judges sit up and take notice of this star on the rise.
As well as bringing home a truckload of silverware, the club members – through their results at the championships – have all qualified for the Australian team.
If they choose to go, they will represent Australia at the world titles later this year.
While the individual results were brilliant for the riders, they were just as important to the Tamworth City BMX Club.
At the moment, the club is in rebuilding mode.
The club and track is getting back up to speed after a few years of decline on the local scene.
With that being said, the club is on the lookout for new members.
The club has training nights on Tuesday and Thursday evenings which start at 5.30pm.
Everyone is welcome and for more info check out the club’s Facebook page.
