Along with new turf for about 280 metres of the track, a new camber – the slope applied to the surface – has been put in around the top corner of the track which has also been widened by a metre.
Tamworth Greyhound Racing Club (TGRC) president Robert Munn said the upgrade was “well overdue” but it seems going by Munn’s thoughts on the surface, it was worth the wait.
“I can’t believe where the grass is at in such a short period of time,” Munn said.
“It’s three weeks this Friday since they finished. All the guys, the contractors and Greyhound Racing NSW [who assisted and approved the renovations] officials did a fantastic job during the upgrade period.
“It was that week when it was highs 30s, and probably 40, when they laid the turf.”
Along with looking great, Munn said the upgrades – especially the camber – would give greyhounds a better chance of navigating the turn.
“The way the track is now – the dogs that were unable to handle the turn should be able to handle it a lot better now,” Munn said.
“Hopefully it reduces some injuries as well.
“There’s no guarantee to stop injury, racing’s racing, but with the design and everything, you can’t get it any better to assist in the reduction of collisions and injuries.”
TGRC will need to get the tick of approval by GRNSW on the track before their first meeting of 2018 on February 24.
Munn said the track would be ready to go by then and the club would hold trials beforehand as well.
“We’ll hold some trials in, hopefully, early to mid February for people to get a look at the place and be ready to go on the 24th,” Munn said.
The trials will also give the greyhounds a chance to test the new track out.
