A NEW showcase garden has been officially unveiled in Peel St, with the hope it will inspire residents to take up low-water use alternatives in their own yards.

The garden is one of the latest water sustainability initiatives by Tamworth Regional Council.
“The garden is designed to showcase a variety of attractive ground cover alternatives that residents can install in place of thirsty lawn and turf,” water sustainability officer, Ian Lobban, said.
“It shows how if residents can cover a percentage of their property with some of these water-neutral or low-water use alternatives, it would represent a significant reduction in drinking water consumption, particularly in summer.
TAFE students completed all the design and installation work as part of their formal studies with Council providing the space and funding of about $3,850 for materials.
The plan is for future students to design, install or renovate Council public green-space areas to become low-water-use and drought-tolerant.
Mayor Col Murray and Deputy Mayor Helen Tickle attended a morning tea with students involved in the design and construction of the garden outside the Tamworth art gallery.
