The decision to move the Westpac Rescue Helicopter (WRHS) Tag A Calf sale to better coincide with the weaner season paid off after 4000 cattle went under the hammer in Tamworth last week with the annual fundraiser combined with the Peel Valley Machinery Feature Weaner Sale.

There was an outstanding line up of cattle with feature lines of almost 700 EU accredited Angus and Angus x weaners offered by Pitt Sons, Walcha on account of local breeders Gabby and Helen Wauch, “Mirrabooka” and the dispersal of the nucleus of the “Warongah”, Manilla breeding herd by Purtle Plevey Associates (PPA) attracting huge interest.
The best of the Mirrabooka steer calves made $1340, while the heifers topped at $1185 with vendor Gabby Wauch saying that the season is the best it’s been for many years on the tablelands.
Yearling steers sold to $1445 for big Hereford steers sold by PPA on account L Monk, Upper Manilla. The best weaner heifers sold to $1550 for yard weaned, 9-10 month Angus heifers (complete drop), ready to join sold by PPA on account Warongah, Manilla.
The best yearling heifers made $1170 for weaned Angus heifers, AA bloodlines sold by Landmark on account D’Hudson Family Trust.

PTIC cows sold to $2450 for the rising three-year-old Warongah cows, PTIC with some of the draft purchased by Tony and Tania Haling, “Hillside Park” Woolbrook who have won the Virbac Weaner Challenge 4 years in a row. “Warongah” sold just under 350 females, all Booragul and Booroomooka blood, with selling agent, Patrick Purtle of Purtle Plevey Associates, Manilla describing the herd as one of the best breeding operations in the area for many years.
Acting Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce also made an appearance.
The sale is expected to have raised between $6000 and $10,000 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
“Since the day I wandered in to chat to the agents about this idea, they have encouraged farmers and other agents from across the district selling cattle to donate a beast or a portion of to help our Service when they can,” WRHS community liaison officer Michael Wilson said.
