Bit of a fool: Some think the word nincompoop comes from the Dutch words for clown and fool. Poopnoddy meant in the early Dutch blockhead, or a fool. A variant was noddypoop.

In 1676, William Wycherley in The Plain Dealer commented “thou senseless, impertinent nincompoop”. I don’t think he intended that his comment be flattering.
