The amazing achievement was not only a celebration for the young Tamworth star, but also a relief after coming so close in previous attempts that have seen him finish in both other spots on the podium, as well as taking out the National Championship in March this year.
“I have had some bad luck at state in the past so it was good to get a bit of good luck this year,” Davis said.
Davis, who only got a broken wrist out of a cast four weeks prior to the titles took that luck and rode with it, pulling off a “Bradbury” moment in the semifinals before putting all his talent and hard work in to take out the final.
In the semi Davis was left on the line after tearing his foot off the pedal out of the gate.
“I shot straight back to last,” Davis said.
“I was trying to get my foot back in the pedal when the top four all brought each other down.”
Needing a top four finish Davis was right back in the mix to fly over the line in second and snare gate six for the final.
In the final the three inside riders had an early tangle and with an outside run Davis shot to the front and never looked back.
“I have never lead into the first corner before.”
“It was only when I came out of the last turn that I thought about winning and got a bit excited. It was a goal that I have wanted to achieve for a while so I was stoked to get it.”
Not only did the now state and national champion pick up the trophy, but he also impressed selectors enough to be picked up in the NSW High performance squad.
His father Paul said that the selection will mean some extra coaching sessions and competitions, while it is also the first step towards getting picked up by the National High Performance squad and realising a dream that he has had since 2008, riding in the Olympic Games.
Whilst he will be eligible for the 2020 Tokyo games the focus is on the 2024 games, in the meantime however Davis will still travel the globe chasing titles.
After spending last year living in Canada with his family, and finishing second overall in the national rankings and sixth in the USA rankings, Davis and his father are about to head back stateside for the biggest BMX competition on the globe, the Grand Nationals.
After placing fifth in the semifinal last year Davis is determined to put that experience to good use in his second year round.
“A final would be great, but a podium - amazing.”
