Aubrey Michael Flick has been refused bail in court charged with the attempted murder of a 38-year-old man who he allegedly hunted down about 5pm on Wednesday in Coledale.
Police said the alleged victim was “covered” in stab wounds, but miraculously, is recovering and is listed in a stable condition in Tamworth hospital after emergency treatment.
The drama unfolded when Flick, 32, allegedly went to a home in Glen St to speak with the man, who police confirmed were known to one another.
Oxley Inspector Matt French said police will allege in court Flick stabbed the man in “in excess of 20 times.”
“The alleged offender, who was armed with two knives, chased the victim down Glen St and into Sue Crescent,” he said.
“The victim attempted to seek refuge at a nearby house, it is alleged at that time he was stabbed on multiple occasions in what has been described as a frenzied attack.
“The victim suffered in excess of 20 stab wounds, to the torso, shoulder, hands and leg areas.”
Police said two weapons had been seized and were similar to steak knives, about 12cm in length with a seven or eight centimeter blade.
Flick, 32, was captured minutes later after frantic calls to triple zero by witnesses in Coledale.
“Numerous calls were made to police who responded swiftly, within minutes, the alleged offender was arrested nearby in Cossa St,” Inspector French said.
“At that time he was armed with two knives and the actions of police were both courageous and highly professional.”
“We believe it’s a targeted attack, certainly the swift response by police to take him off the street was excellent.”
Inspector French said the two men were known to each other but would not comment on the motive for the alleged attack and said the case was now before the courts.
Detectives and forensic police have combed two crime crime scenes, and have spoken with the alleged victim, who is expected to remain in hospital for a number of days.
“Our investigators have spoken to him at this stage but obviously his recuperation is the most important thing at this time and we will speak to him further,” Inspector French said.
He praised the swift response by officers across all units of the command including general duties, detectives, the dog squad and the Oxley Target Action group.
Police will allege Flick spat at a police officer when he was taken into custody. He is charged with attempted murder and assault police.
During an out-of-sessions bail hearing on Thursday morning in Tamworth Local Court, Flick made no application for bail and it was formally refused by the court.
Police also made a detention application against Flick, who was on bail for charges of being armed with intent to commit and indictable offence and a domestic-related assault occasioning actual bodily harm, which was granted because of the breach of bail.
He was taken to Tamworth Correctional Centre on Thursday where he will remain until he fronts court again next week.
