The email purports to be from the Australian Federal Police (AFP), serving a subpoena on the recipient and contains several links which may be malicious.
The scam involves victims opening an email which indicates they have broken the law and are being issued with a notice to attend court.
New England crime prevention officer Senior Constable Chris Jordan said locals should delete any unusual or suspicious content sent via email.
“New England police have been made aware of this latest online scam being circulated throughout Northern NSW,” he said yesterday.
“Please do not open the email. Delete it from your inbox and deleted folder.
“Anyone with any questions or queries should contact their local police station.”
When users click on a link they are directed to a Russian webpage where they are prompted to download an executable application which infects their computer.
The AFP said it does not issue subpoenas via email, and is urging members of the public to report the scam to ACORN or SCAMwatch.
