While numbers were a little down from previous years, an estimated $50,000 was raised.
Cancer Council North West spokeswoman Amy Walker said the event “really successful” and put the smaller crowd down to the change of venue along with the number of events on at the same time.
“We were very happy with the turnout considering how hot it was, how many other events were on and the changes we introduced,” Ms Walker said.
“The candle-light ceremony, which paid special tribute to those lost to cancer, was really moving and we got a lot of compliments about it.”
It was the first time the relay was held at the showground.
“It’s a really good venue – it’s safe and secure with lots of facilities, and it gives us lots of room to grow and rebuild,” Ms Walker said.
Cancer Council North West is looking at giving the relay an 18 month break to pull it out of the busy spring period.
