The former Townsville cowboy, who moved to Tamworth last year, won two ATRA titles in Capella, central Queensland last weekend.
This weekend he’s contesting the APRA rope and tie and team roping in the AELEC at Tamworth.
While he doesn’t like the cold weather in Tamworth, he’s delighted with the pair of titles from Capella where he and Aaron Bookluck prevailed.
“I’m the header and he’s the heeler,” Stagg explained this week.
“We won the Open Prelims to qualify for the final as well as Open Team Roping.”
Success has never been too far away from Stagg of late either.
“I was the 2011 ABCRA team roping champion and last Christmas I won the National Finals Rodeo team roping.”
He’s been rodeoing for around 20 years and was hugely impressed by last weekend’s ATRA championships in the indoor arena at Capella.
“The quality of cattle and the organisation was brilliant,” he said.
He took two quarter horses up to ride as well.
“One was a giveaway and he’s turned into a pretty good horse,” Stagg added.
Tomorrow’s APRA rodeo in Tamworth has attracted many competitors keen to win prize money, the only determining factor in deciding the top 15 qualifiers in each event for the National Finals Rodeo each year.
Organisers expect to better last year’s crowd, partly due to lower admission fees – $20 for adults, $15 for children under 16, $55 a family. Children under four are free.
The main performance will be at 7pm but patrons are welcome to come from 1pm for junior events and some open competition.
