Quirindi High School – under a corporate agreement with the Liverpool Plains Shire Council – funded all its enrolled students to access both Quirindi and Werris Creek pools and the Quirindi Recreation Centre.
The school funded the initiative under their equity funding program – which enables enrolled students free to access the facilities for 12 months from January 1 – and results have been immediate.
“This initiative is paying dividends. As well as encouraging student to be active and giving them a focus during the holidays and after school hours, we had nearly half a dozen records broken at our annual swimming carnival yesterday,” Worley said.

In a trial for the school, the carnival on February 15 was also moved to a twilight time slot to enable parents and carers to attend.
“Feedback from the day has been positive. It was terrific to see so many of our students involved and supporting one another and so many families in attendance. It was a great school community atmosphere and a positive event,” Mr Worley said.
Record breakers on the day included Annabelle Avard and Liam Faulkner.
Annabelle broke a record set in 1980 in the girls 14 years 50-metre freestyle.
The previous record was set by K Arnold in a time of 33.28 and Annabelle set the new mark at 31.62.
Liam cut over five seconds off the record in the boys 16 years 100-metre freestyle.
Liam swam the event in 1.01.97 to beat T Thistle’s mark of 1.07.02 set in 2016.
