A week after producing a splendid captain’s knock to secure City a vital outright win over West Tamworth, Smith believes that he should have scored more on day one of the two-dayer against North Tamworth at Riverside 2 on Saturday.
City one the toss and batted, making 188. Smith’s 50 was the second-best performance behind No.3 Tom Fitzgerald’s 68.
In reply, Norths were 2-52 at stumps.
Commenting on getting out LBW to Peter Watson, Smith said: “Today wasn’t good enough from me. I got to 50 and played across the line.
“So I feel like I let the boys down today as a leader … If we’re going to challenge in this competition, batsmen need to go on when they get scores like that.”
Overall, Smith was pleased with City’s performance.
He said: “I would have like more runs. It was a good deck today. A few silly shot, myself included [cost us]. You take those out of it, you get up to the 250, 280 mark, which makes the game a lot more winable. But happy with the day’s play.
“The boys are fired up [after the Wests win]. We came out and bowled fast today and we took two early ones. Look, it could go either way. I would have liked to get Mick Rixon out today.”
Fourth-placed Norths are 2.34 points ahead of City on the table. This round is the penultimate regular-season round.
Best with the ball for Norths were Peter Wilson and Lachie Butler, who finished with 3-23 off eight overs and 3-44 off 10.5 overs.
City’s opening bowlers Tait Jordan and Jack McVey dismissed Norths openers Glenn Lewington (13) and Lachlan Fauchon (7) respectively.
