Total fire bans in force for North West and Northern Slopes areas after fires near Mount Kaputar and Uralla

Firefighters have been on high alert with the searing conditions made worse by strong winds.

Total fire bans are in force for the North West and Northern Slopes areas including the Tamworth, Moree, Narrabri, Gunnedah and Quirindi areas.

The New England was subject to a total fire ban on Wednesday but will experience a very high fire danger rating on Thursday.

On Wednesday afternoon, several police and RFS crews rushed to a property off the New England Highway near Uralla after a fire took off in grass. 

The blaze forced the closure of one lane of the highway with fears for one structure and stock in the fire path.

But crews managed to get the upperhand before the blaze spread.

Meanwhile, the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) closed Mt Kaputar National Park to all visitors and the public due to a fire.

The wildfire is burning south of Sawn Rocks and the Bingara Rd and the predicted severe fire weather prompted crews to shut the park.

Heavy plant, aircraft and fire crews worked to contain the blaze on Wednesday which had burnt out about more than 330 hectares.

Total fire bans have been in force for places like Moree and Narrabri since the weekend.
