The council pound took to social media to call for more responsible pet ownership after taking in the pups.
“This is the result of one person’s irresponsible breeding of animals,” the pound said on its Facebook page.
“Often this is due to ignorance or neglect where a pet dog or cat ‘accidentally’ becomes pregnant because the owner has failed to have them desexed.”
The pound said the puppies came were “covered in fleas and sores” as well as “full of worms, very scared and very young”.
The social media post also railed against “backyard breeders”.
“Backyard breeding contributes to the unwanted companion animal population in the community,” it said.
“Uncontrolled breeding and overpopulation inevitably leads to the euthanasia of healthy unwanted animals.”
A spokesperson for Tamworth Regional Council said there had been an increase “in incoming cats and dogs” which was put down to a lack of desexing in the community.
Council urged locals to keep an eye out for free microchipping days throughout the year.
