Souths made 231 after winning the toss and batting on day one on Saturday, with City United 2-40 in reply.
I think spin is gonna be key.
- Tom O'Neill
Filling in as skipper for Mitch Smith, who was away for a personal engagement, O’Neill tipped spinners Conrad King and Josh Crowe would spearhead the side’s attack this weekend. “Their spinners bowled well and we’ve got two spinners in next week, so hopefully they’ll bowl well,” he said.
Souths’ best batters were Blake Fitzgerald (57), O’Neill (39) and Tom Groth (37).
Fitzgerald and Groth came together with Souths in trouble at 4-44. The duo took the score to 103 before Groth was caught and bowled by Scott Brennan.
Three City United bowlers claimed three wickets – Joey Mead (3-29 off nines overs), Tait Jordan (3-42 off 15 overs) and Brennan (3-63 off 21 overs).
George and Angus McNeil snared the wickets of Dan Whale (28) and Troy Hearfield (three) respectively.
O’Neill said: “We sort of lost a few early ones but Blake and Grothy brought us back into the game a bit. “It’s a shame we didn’t have three [City wickets] down towards the end.”
O’Neill described 231 as “pretty good”. “Considering the wickets we lost early, I think we did well to get to that,” he said.
