The Loomberah locals were among more than 800 riders to compete in the NCHA 2017 Futurity finals at AELEC over the weekend, in a case of sister against sister, and dad against daughter.
Sixteen-year-old Jasmine Shumack and 'Eyebrows Cat' scored a 222pt showing to be crowned champions in the final of the Tim Mitchell Memorial Senior Youth class.
“There were a lot more people this year, which always makes it a bit tougher,” she said.
Among her competitors was big sister, Matilda. The 19-year-old placed fifth on self-trained mare 'Sweet Lil Snagglepuss' with a 211pt showing.
But Jasmine wasn’t the only family member Matilda took on, competing against dad Peter, who doubles as the NCHA president.
“I was so nervous,” she said. “I think nerves got the best of me.”
Peter showed imported mare ‘Fair Lady Flash’ in the non-pro classic challenge final late Sunday afternoon.
“It definitely runs in the family,” mum Jacinta said.
