A Ford Falcon and Toyota Kluger collided around 3.15pm. The driver of the Ford, a 30-year-old man, died at the scene.
The passenger of the Ford, a 19-year-old woman, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries.
The driver of the Toyota, a 44-year-old woman, and her 54-year-old male passenger, were also treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
All three people were taken to Tamworth Hospital for further treatment.
Crash Investigation Unit Officers established a crime scene and will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
FRIDAY: Four people have been taken to hospital with injuries sustained in a serious accident west of Tamworth on Friday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Oxley Highway and Murroon Rd about 3.10pm following reports of a serious crash.
The road, which is the main access road to the Tamworth airport was still blocked as of 5pm on Friday as crash investigators made their way to the scene.
There are reports of people trapped, however a NSW Ambulance spokesman said crews were treating four people and had conveyed them to Tamworth Hospital.
The Ambulance spokesman said they included a woman in her 30s, who sustained reported chest and back injuries, and another patient was transported with chest and leg injuries, while a man in his 40s was also taken to hospital for treatment.
The spokesman said a woman believed to be in her 40s was also taken to Tamworth Hospital, but her injuries could not be confirmed.
The condition of all four patients was not known.
Roads and Maritime NSW said traffic is being diverted south on Goddard Ln and northbound on New Winton Rd.
The road is expected to be closed for some time as the cause of the crash is investigated, however updates are available from the RMS website.
No other information could be provided to The Leader late this afternoon.
