Shane Gleeson, Matthew Hellman and Luke Struck, who work for 41-year-old Tamworth firm Curry & Gleeson, have been building, servicing and repairing KidzFix rally cars for a number of years, a tradition started 20 years ago by business owner Darrell Gleeson.
In December, the three decided to ditch the barber shop for a while and let it all hang out – their hair, that is – and at the same time, raise some money for KidzFix.
The KidzFix rally is an adventurous way to support children around Australia, while seeing some of the best country roads on offer. This year’s rally goes from Gympie to Nowra, from September 11-19.
Eight months down the track, the trio’s tally is sitting around the $1000 mark and the long-haired larrikins can see the end in sight.
On Saturday, at South Tamworth Bowling Club, during the KidzFix charity bowls day, Luke’s girlfriend, Jaymee, a hairdresser from RBK, will take the clippers to the trio.
While the lads’ charitable move is admirable, they did have an ulterior motive, according to Matthew.
“We wanted Luke to have a haircut and he wasn’t keen, so we all decided to do this,” he said.
Shane, who usually sports a close-cropped number one, said he was just about over his long locks and couldn’t wait to get rid of his mane.
The three paid tribute to the major and minor sponsors who’d kicked in to boost their kitty, including Grab’n’Gobble, Eezee Car Wash, and of course, their own employers.
All work carried out on the rally cars is done free of charge by Curry & Gleeson, so their hairy mission was not totally unexpected – but they’ll all be pleased to see the end of it.
So don’t be surprised next week if beanies are part of the new uniform code at Curry & Gleeson.
